Happy Easter!

I'm not a big fan of Easter, just because of all the bunnies and eggs, and the fact that the holiday stems from pagan roots and the word Easter itself was the name of a fertility goddess (hence the bunnies and eggs)!

I want my kids to celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. They can hunt eggs or something similar any day of the year.

So on this day I just wanted to share what was on my mind.....

Celebrating Jesus' resurrection is a great thing to celebrate, and we should rejoice that He is risen and lives forevermore, but let's not forget that it was his DEATH that atoned for our sins. If He had not died for us, we would not have a way to be in heaven with Him someday! Thank you, Lord! What a sacrifice! You love us so much!!!

  1. Wow. I wrote a post I thought might be controversial and thought no one knew about the pagan roots. Thank you for this post.

  2. I've been walking around all day saying "Happy Resurrection Day!" People at my Church were looking at me "Uhhh ok?" LOL

Me & a good girlfriend of mine were talking about holidays & why I don't celebrate them like easter I call it resurrection day, Christmas my daughter & I don't do presents because it not Our birthday (we do however get the after Christmas sales.Hey, a sale is a sale) but, my Ffriend was saying "Umm bunnies don't lay eggs so what does one have to do with the other? If people just would just question that, they might look into it a little and find out what it really was all about"

I think it's kinda crazy that more people don't ? these things but, anywho.......Happy Resurrection Day!

  3. My in laws think I'm mean to the kids b/c I say there is no santa or easter bunny but hey why would I make them believe in something that's not real and for them to later find out that it's not real. That only makes God seem like He's not real b/c we made them think He was real when they were little. My MIL just rolls her eyes and says it's suppose to be about the fun of it but I just don't see the fun of it if it makes them believe there is no God later in their life.

Also ever since we got chickens here on our small farm and they are true free range chickens we do an egg hunt every day! LOL! The little girls love it so to them easter is about finding plastic eggs w/candy.Whoopty-do why hunt for eggs w/candy when they can just ask for candy and I can open the wrapper and give it to them.Well that sounded lazy but it's not worth it.

I learned all about the true meaning of easter when my SIL became a wicca priestess. She is actually ordained and can marry people but she chooses not to b/c she is gay and would only want to marry the gay people. So I have known of the true meaning for a while now.She insists on me knowing what she believes.Like she is going to make me believe in her fake gods.WHATEVER!

Anyways I am rambling now! Glad you posted. If my blog was open I probably would have posted this info too!

  4. We always used to say "Happy Resurrection Day" at my old church for that reason. But I don't know -- Wiccan priestesses aside, I don't think most people mean the word Easter to refer to the goddess of the dawn, you know? I just sort of take it in the spirit it was intended, particularly if a "Happy Easter" is offered at church, by my pastor. Ha ha! I actually appreciate that the church took the time to transform and reinterpret the pagan celebrations instead of just ignoring them -- I think it helped things stick, and is sort of reminiscent of Paul using pagan poetry to convince his hearers of the message of the resurrection. But that's just my historical/theological take on the whole thing, so I'll stop babbling! I don't disagree that the bunnies and eggs are over the top and meaningless, but -- hey, it's spring. I like celebrating the return of new life, too, even if it's just earthly. And I like bunny Peeps and Cadbury eggs. :)

At any rate, I was happy to celebrate with the church on such a special Sunday of the year, so praise be to God for the death and the resurrection, and that it's a package deal! And next Sunday -- we can celebrate the resurrection all over again, since that's what Sundays are there for! :)

  5. You're right, it IS a package deal! Both are very important and necessary! I think so many people just focus too much on the resurrection though that they almost ignore the sacrifice, so that is where I was coming from. :)
