"Why is it the sinner is treated as a free moral agent and told he must repent (forsake his sins), but once he forsakes his sins and is saved, he is then told he is eternally secure? 

This means that he now loses his freedom because the sins he used to commit, if he were to return to them, would not be enough to disqualify him from God's kingdom! So what we have is that the sins committed by the unsaved will send them to Hell, but the SAME sins committed by the saved will give them eternal bliss with Jesus for all eternity.
