Off-grid and self-sufficiency: Preparing for the Change

I may do a series about moving off-grid and compile them once I am done.....which will be a while since we aren't quite ready for the move yet, but we're getting there! So, just a few thoughts and a question for anyone reading. :) Here are some short term goals, things we are working on now that will get us closer to moving:

  1. Get rid of ALL debt BEFORE buying land or anything else necessary for living. There may be a few exceptions, such as our water catchment system and our chickens, and we may purchase items here and there that we will need, but only when we need them here. For example, a wood stove. We don't NEED one just yet, and we do have a fireplace, but it makes me nervous, so we may go ahead and use a wood stove this winter. But for the most part, we're trying very hard to get our debt paid off by the end of the year. We also plan to pay cash for our land and everything else, so NO MORE DEBT!!!!! I'm tired of being a slave!!!
  2. Purge, purge, PURGE!!!!!! I've already been working on this for a while, but we still have so much junk.....and we really are not very materialistic, there are just a lot of us!!!! I am paring down our clothing to just a few outfits each. That's it. We're going to be washing laundry by hand, so the less clothes the better! (We've already been line drying for a while, and when our washer dies, if not before, we're not planning to replace it!)
  3. Learn how to do things without electricity. Laundry, cooking, lighting rooms, figure out how to charge and use electronics or go without! These are the main things that affect us, but there are so many things we use that require electricity, especially the fridge! I don't think we're going to use propane for anything (just not interested), so we'll either have to make some kind of cold storage area, get solar power for the fridge or learn to live without. Honestly, it's ICE that I will miss, at least during the summer!
So, once these things are all accomplished, we can begin to make the transition!!!!!
  1. Quit work and move! Once our debt is all gone, we will sell this house, hubby will quit his job and away we go! Now, we have several children, some of whom can take care of themselves now, but we are trying to figure out the best way to transition. What I mean is, should we rent an apartment in the area we're planning to move, or should we just try to buy some land around the time we sell this house and then "camp" while we build?
  2. Build a tall, sturdy fence!
This will be our first priority for safety reasons, so maybe even before we officially move onto the land, we will determine how big of an area will be fenced in and get it up. There are some potentially dangerous animals for hundreds of thousands of acres in the area we're looking (including Bigfoot! Ha!), so safety must be top priority!
  3. Find a water source! Duh, right?! Gotta have water to live! We'd LOVE to have a river or lake on or next to our property, but even a smaller creek or pond would be fine. However, being in the mountains, it shouldn't be difficult to locate a spring or seep. There are a lot of little tributaries off of the big river, so I don't think we'll have trouble locating a source. Worse case scenario, we can dig a well, but hopefully we won't have to go through the expense. We'll also catch rain water, and we know how to filter it and boil, if needed, and we will have it tested as well.
  4. Build shelter! Either temporary or permanent, depending on circumstances and the time of year. Obviously some of these things are going to be done simultaneously, but there is still that possibility we may have to stay somewhere else for a bit while we get some things going.
  5. Plant a garden. We'd love to have a green house as well, but depending on the time of year we move, a regular ol' (Back to Eden style) garden should give us most of our food. We will plant some fruit trees as well.
  6. Chop wood!!!! We've already decided we've got to move before the end of September at the latest so we'll have time get enough wood chopped for the winter. Gotta stay warm!!!
One thing we've been learning through the years, thankfully while we have room for errors (still being on-grid), is that we need to always look ahead to the next season to prepare. During the summer and fall, we need to prepare buildings, animals, chop wood, etc. for the winter. If we don't, we may not be warm! During winter and spring, we need to work hard on our garden or we may not have enough to eat! It will definitely be hard work, but we're looking forward to it!

There are many more things we'll need to do when you get into the fine details, but these are things we're working on now. What is the one thing you feel is a MUST for going off-grid and being self-sufficient that I did not mention?

Still here.....

Just a quick update.....I am still looking for a good alternative to this particular host that meets all my requirements. I think I have one. I'm checking it out today. I haven't forgotten to blog, I am actually DYING to get some new content up (even if no one reads it, HA!), but I really want to find a new host first. So keep checking back. I'll hopefully have a new link to share soon! :)

In the meantime, here's a picture of my girls about a week ago. I made this mei tai for a friend. Jessi loves being "worn" like this. The pictures are horrible quality because our really nice camera is having issues, but I'm about to send it in for repairs. Anywho, here they are! Jayla is 12 1/2 and Jessi just turned TWO! She's at such a fun, adorable stage. :) Oh, just thought of another pic I need to share here too, (which includes Joe from the side. lol (His hair is shorter now, too.) This was about a month ago.

The front carry.

The back carry. It's reversible!

SpiderBaby!! Is this not the most adorable little super hero you've ever seen?!?

It sure is COLD this week! I cannot believe this year is almost over. We need to get pictures of our family again soon....updates of the kiddos and maybe a new one of me and hubs, too. :) Leave me a comment and let me know what your favorite memory from this year was, and a couple of New Year's resolutions on your list!

Update on the family

Everyone is doing great....happy, healthy, growing (except Mama and Papa, we're shrinking!), learning so much....Yah is so GOOD to us!!! \o/

Jonathan and Jacob will no longer be in Boy/Cub Scouts because of their policy change, but they will still do something. Jayla just started dance again last week. Jack is doing well in speech and will start horse riding therapy again in a few weeks. Joe is talking like crazy and loves his baby sister so much! And Jessica is always wanting to eat and always wanting Mama. :)

They all (except Jessi) just entered some crafts in the county fair. Jonathan won 2nd place on his set of tzitziot. Jayla won 3 2nd place ribbons on art made from nature, decoupage and a felt house/yard. Jacob won 2nd on his Lego racecar and 3rd on his decoupage. Jack won 2nd on his decoupage. Joe won 2nd on his Lego racecar and 1st on his decoupage! The only ones competing against each other were Jack and Joe with their decoupage. The only items that did not place in the top 3 were Jonathan's drawing and 3 more crafts by Jayla; a Lego rescue boat, a bead bracelet and a quilt she made for my mom. Now, this quilt was entirely her own work, and she did an excellent job, but they never unfolded it to look at it!!!! In fact, it was folded to where you could only see the back side of it! So she was pretty upset about that, but Grandma still has a quilt from her that she will cherish, and I'm sure Jayla will get it back someday.

Number SIX is on the way!

Not yet, but soon, we hope! Haha! I just thought that would be a great title for a story and thoughts I wanted to share!

I was at the store the other day when an older woman in front of me passed a younger lady on the other side and made a comment about the 3 children who were with her. She smiled BRIGHTLY and replied, "This isn't even half of my crew." I couldn't resist. As the older lady in front of me moved out of the aisle (with no response to the mother), I smiled pretty big myself and asked, "How many do you have?" She said there are 7 of them and one on the way, and she was BEAMING with joy! I couldn't help but tell her congratulations for the coming baby! I was truly excited for her!

As I went back to my mom's house (we were staying with her for a few days), I dreamed about what it might be like if everyone loved, respected and WANTED children as much as this lady. It would be so nice if everyone in our family and all our friends expressed the same excitement over #5 as they did with #'s 1 or 2. Of course, everyone loves #5 just as much, once they get to know him, but I can't imagine never having wanting him. What was life like without him?!

Life is always so much more full when you add another family member. Busier, yes. Harder, maybe in some aspects, but a little easier in other ways as kids get older. Full of love, always.

I have never really been much of a "baby person", though I do love babies, I just have never been the one to want to hold every baby I see, but I do understand that they are loved and valued by Yahweh. He told us to be fruitful and multiply, and children are a blessing from Him. I want His blessings! Of course, blessings come in many forms, but I certainly don't want to reject His blessings (in this case, with birth control), so we will probably be having #6 in the next couple of years......and I couldn't be more excited! I'll admit, I would like to regain control of my own body, but to watch these precious little gifts from my heavenly Father grow and learn all about Him and love Him with all their heart, it is priceless. I don't care if I do have a "bad" pregnancy or a bad birth experience for any reason, if Yahweh chooses to bless me then He will protect me and/or care for my family. Fear will not guide our decision making. That is what faith is, to trust that He will do what He promised us, even when we don't understand.

If anyone reading this is struggling with the idea of letting God choose the size of your family, just trust Him! He knows best, and He will not give you a child and then forsake you! He will take care of you and your family, whatever the circumstance.

More October pics

Let's see if I can finish them up in one more post!

Once we left my brother's house, we went to visit some aunts and uncles and a cousin on the way home. First we went by Aunt T's house. We got there later than anticipated, and this was a spontaneous visit.....we just thought about stopping by after we hit the road, so she didn't have much notice! They (she and one of her sons) were very gracious though. We just stayed in a pop-up camper on their 5 acres and then spent several hours there the following day. They feed around 75 animals every day, some of them wild, so the kids had a great time helping out with that!

There were two of these geese, and they followed us everywhere, honking and pecking at us every chance they got! They hurt Jack a couple of times, but the older three would chase them away!
 Pot-belly pig
Lots of wild deer share food with the turkeys, guineas and chickens.

The chickens love to cross the fence and go into the woods.

 This made me nervous!

Don't worry, he didn't really drive!
 Here they come again!
Not the best picture, but the only one we got of the two bunnies.

 My brave little guy!

 Aunt T!!!

Next we went to another aunt and uncle's house nearby......

Two aunts! These two lovely ladies are my mother-in-law's sisters!
We were all so exhausted, but what a fun day!

Next our Keepers At Home group had a sewing day! We met at a local sewing shop and the girls made their sashes.

Jayla

Jack was a handful, trying to keep him out of the spools of thread and bucket of buttons!

Jayla again....she has sewn before and is getting pretty good at it!

A couple of the moms got in on the fun too!

 Jayla with her finished product.

Pumpkin patch time!

Jacob was so proud of his perfect pumpkin!

Jack finally found one he liked.

Jayla loved this one but decided to pick it for Grandma so she could get a different one. :)

Jack changed his mind.

I think he finally settled on this one. :)

Jayla was helping push! Haha!

I tried to surprise Myles with a "While You Were Out" weekend. The plan was to organize a painting party (since I was pregnant and wasn't allowed to be around the fumes) while he and Jonathan were camping. I had no idea how much work it was just to prep for it! I worked my tail off for 3 weeks, then the day before this was to happen, I blew the surprise. I thought he knew, so I said something only to find out that I was the one who told him! Haha! Oh, well.

He ended up not going camping (which I knew about a couple of weeks before), so he was able to stay and help. We ended up only having a couple of people come. They did manage to get the first coat on, but then the cracks and nail holes, etc. were MUCH more noticeable, so it still needed a 2nd coat.

That hasn't happened yet, here at the end of January!!!

However, we have gotten a lot accomplished since then.

These are homemade curtain rods that the kids helped me with. I don't have them hanging yet, so I can't show "after" pictures.

I just really love this picture. :)

I think Jacob took this one himself, which I also like. :)

She insisted on helping and primed as much of the trim as she could!
And of course, Jack was not to be outdone.

Aw, a cute pic of Jonathan too! :)

I'll just post one of the chicks since I already blogged about them. Aren't they cute? :)

We went to a baby shower, and I thought the facial expression on this adorable little girl was priceless when Jayla fed her a chip with some salsa!

And I have NO idea how she got two of the exact same sweaters (plus she had one like this when she was 2 years old too!), but Jayla wanted to give one to her friend so they could match. Cute, huh?

And a pic of me with my Jack-Jack to finish off the month.

I did it! Wow, there were tons of pictures in October!
